Heartbeat Celebrates 40 Years of Service with Banquet on March 29
Posted by admin on 01/31/11
Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe it has been 40 years since Heartbeat of Toledo Pregnancy Support Center first opened its doors.

Did you know that Heartbeat of Toledo was the first pregnancy help center in the country? Back in 1971 there were no home pregnancy tests and abortion was not legal. Our founders, Dr. John Hillabrand and Mrs. Lore Maier, saw a critical need for a safe, confidential, and compassionate place for women facing unplanned pregnancies to get the help they needed. Heartbeat of Toledo was ahead of its time in providing these services.

After opening our office here in Toledo, Dr. Hillabrand and Mrs. Maier assisted others in opening pregnancy centers throughout the country and internationally as well. Mrs. Maier went on to lead an affiliate organization called Alternatives to Abortion International. That group later changed its name to Heartbeat International in the 1990s. Today, Heartbeat International has more than 1,100 affiliates throughout the world.

Heartbeat of Toledo has continued to grow and adapt to meet the needs of the young women we serve. Recently we opened an early pregnancy center to provide free ultrasounds and the opportunity for women to meet with a registered nurse to discuss their pregnancy. The ultrasounds are used to confirm the viability of a pregnancy as well as the baby’s gestational age.

We feel it is important for women facing an unplanned pregnancy to get as much information as they can before making any decisions regarding the future of their pregnancy. In addition to ultrasounds, client advocates are also available to help women explore their options.

Although our ultrasound center has only been open for a short time, it is already making a huge impact on the lives of the women we serve. The ultrasounds truly give these women a window to the womb and help them realize that what is growing inside them is not just a “blob of tissue.”

Besides our early pregnancy center, Heartbeat also offers Heart to Heart, a prenatal and parent learning program. Now starting its fifth year, Heart to Heart gives new and expectant parents the opportunity to earn the baby items they need by completing one-on-one parenting lessons.

We’re also proud to announce our newest program, “Healthy Relationships.” This program is being offered thanks to a grant from the Toledo Community Foundation. Healthy Relationships is a joint program offered between us and Positive Choices, a program of Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.

Healthy Relationships focuses on helping young women gain self respect and learn how to form healthy, lasting relationships with others.

To celebrate our 40 years of service I would like to invite you to join us at our 40th anniversary banquet planned for Tuesday, March 29 at Gladieux Meadows. Our featured speaker is Actress Jennifer O’Neill who is the national spokeswoman of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign. She has been an active participant in the annual March for Life in Washington D.C.

Cost for this very special dinner is $50 per person. Reservations can be made by calling Heartbeat at 419-241-9131.

I’m sitting in a very sunny window right now, but I’m told that snowy weather will be here soon. Let’s hope spring arrives early this year.

Happy February,

Ultlrasound Up & Running
Posted by admin on 12/15/10
Dear Friends,

I am pleased to tell you that Heartbeat of Toledo has now been offering free ultrasounds for the last few weeks. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus and our wonderful donors we have been able to acquire an ultrasound, train our nurses and equip our medical clinic. We also have Dr. Harvey Popovich serving as our medical director and Dr. Lilian Miller reading our scans.

It will still be a few weeks before our clinic has its official grand opening. We will keep you posted here and on our facebook page as to when that happens. Leadership Toledo is assisting us in the marketing plans so that we can make young women facing unplanned pregnancies aware of our services. In the meantime you can spread the word that Heartbeat is a safe place to come and explore options--and we won't benefit from the decision they make!

Many, many thanks to everyone who has supported Heartbeat this past year. We know that in this economy it may be a tremendous sacrifice to spare money for a donation and we appreciate your faith in us and your belief in our mission. Our young moms and dads and their precious infants have been hit hard and are so grateful for the diapers, formula, and other assistance we provide--and we couldn't provide it without you.  Thank you all.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a blessed new year.

Please Come to Our Breakfast
Posted by admin on 09/20/10
Heartbeat Pregnancy Support Center would like to invite you to be our guests at a special breakfast fundraiser for Heartbeat. This free breakfast is planned for Thursday, October 14th, from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. at Gladieux Meadows on Heatherdowns Boulevard. The purpose of the breakfast is to increase awareness of Heartbeat’s Mission for Life, inspire new volunteers and generate new and sustainable funding options to meet our life-saving goals. At the breakfast you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about Heartbeat and the women and babies we've helped through the 39 years that Heartbeat has been in existence.

You’ll also hear about our plans to begin offering ultrasounds to our clients and our plan to move to bigger quarters. Studies have shown that abortion-vulnerable women who see their babies on an ultrasound are much less likely to go through with an abortion. They come to realize what we already know—that growing inside them is a human life.

Please email or call Heartbeat at 419-241-9131 to make a reservation. Hope to see you at our breakfast.

Ultrasound Update
Posted by admin on 08/24/10
August 24, 2010

Dear Friends,

When we created this new website a year ago, I promised myself that I would keep it up to date. Yet I looked at our website this morning and saw that it has been six months since my last blog.

The good news about that is that we have been incredibly busy. We are moving in the right direction to soon be able to offer ultrasounds. These ultrasounds are used to confirm pregnancy as well as viability and gestational age.

Earlier this year Heartbeat of Toledo joined NIFLA, the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates. For more than 10 years NIFLA has been helping centers convert to medical clinics. NIFLA’s President, Thomas Glessner, reports that centers converting to medical clinics will see an increase in the total number of clients seen and in the number of abortion-minded clients. They will also see a dramatic increase in the percentage of clients choosing life.

Heartbeat of Toledo is currently undergoing the training necessary to convert to a medical clinic. Our board and volunteers met with a NIFLA representative earlier this month to begin the training process.

In September our new nurse manager, a volunteer nurse and I will be heading to Virginia to be trained to do ultrasounds and also run a medical clinic.

Following that training an organization called Sonography Now will come out to the Heartbeat office for two weeks to supervise the newly trained nurses doing scans.

Besides our two nurses, we also have two doctors who have volunteered their services. One will serve as our medical director while the other will be reading the ultrasound scans.

The Knights of Columbus in the Toledo Diocese are spearheading a grant request and fundraising effort to acquire the funds to purchase an ultrasound machine for us.

It will be a busy fall here at Heartbeat. If all goes according to plan, we should be able to offer ultrasounds by the end of the year.
