The Heartbeat House
Heartbeat of Toledo is preparing The Heartbeat House, a small residential maternity home designed to provide safe, stable housing and structured support for pregnant women and new mothers with infants.
The home will serve up to two mothers and their infants at one time. Each family will have a private sleeping room while sharing the kitchen, bathroom, living areas, laundry, meals, household routines, and common responsibilities. The third bedroom will serve as a nursery, playroom, and family-resource space.
Each resident will work with the Life Coach/House Manager and Heartbeat staff on an individualized plan shaped by her needs, goals, progress, and path toward greater independence. Support may include healthy pregnancy and postpartum care, early parenting, financial stability, education or employment goals, and preparation for permanent housing.

The Project Is Moving Forward
- Demolition is complete, and renovation work is progressing throughout the home.
- Local companies continue contributing labor, materials, furnishings, and professional services.
- Heartbeat is finalizing staffing, training, insurance, furnishings, and operating plans.
- Preparations are focused on opening a safe, welcoming home that can serve Toledo families responsibly for years to come.
Our goal: substantially complete construction in November and prepare the home to welcome its first residents around December 2026. The final opening date will depend on completion of construction, inspections, insurance, staffing, furnishing, and all required approvals. The Heartbeat House is not yet accepting residents.

Why This Approach Works
Housing instability during pregnancy and early motherhood can make it harder to maintain healthcare, recover after birth, continue work or education, and prepare for a baby’s daily needs. A safe home removes one of the largest immediate barriers facing mothers who are working toward stability.
With housing secured, residents can focus on recovery, bonding with their babies, establishing healthy routines, and developing parenting and household skills.
The Heartbeat House will connect residents with prenatal and postpartum care, pediatric care, WIC, benefits assistance, behavioral-health resources, employment and education support, and permanent-housing services throughout the Toledo area.
The home is not simply a temporary place to stay. It is a structured setting designed to help mothers and infants move forward with safety, dignity, accountability, and a stronger foundation.

Tax Benefits of Giving
Contributions designated for The Heartbeat House are charitable donations to Heartbeat of Toledo, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and may be eligible for a federal income-tax deduction to the extent permitted by law.
Donors will receive written acknowledgment for tax reporting and recordkeeping. Gifts may be made as one-time contributions or structured as recurring support.
Donors should consult their own tax or financial advisor regarding the treatment of a charitable gift.
Potential Ohio Tax-Credit Opportunity
Ohio Senate Bill 40 proposes a state income-tax credit for donations to qualifying pregnancy resource centers and maternity homes.
The proposal has not become law, and donors should not currently treat a gift as eligible for an Ohio maternity-home tax credit. Heartbeat of Toledo will continue monitoring the legislation and any future eligibility requirements.
The Heartbeat House is a residential home providing structured support and safe housing for up to two mothers and their infants. It is not a medical facility, emergency shelter, hotel, boarding house, or routinely overnight-staffed institution. No residents will move into the home until required construction, inspections, insurance, staffing, safety measures, and occupancy preparations are complete.
